Craigslist or Kijiji for OSRS Gold

Do not buy osrs gold on craigslist

We have recently had a few people come to our Live Support complaining about being scammed on popular classified websites like Kijiji and Craigslist.  These are a hot bed for scams.  There are advertisements posted across these types of websites with people selling OSRS Gold.  You need to understand the reality using these sites.

Classified Sites are for IN-PERSON Transactions

Only use sites like Craigslist or Kijiji if you are meeting somebody in person to transact.  Do not send random people from these sites money.  There are several notorious scammers who trick people who are trying to Buy OSRS Gold.  Some of them even will tell you their life story, let you speak with their family members, all in an effort to have you send them money online.  They usually will prefer payment methods which cannot be reversed, like Western Union.

Beware!  Once you send these types of payments, you cannot get them back.  If the seller does not deliver, you are screwed.  The people you'll speak to on sites like Kijiji or Craigslist have no way to prove their reputation.  Anybody can post an ad on these websites.  Sending money to strangers, who have no business track record, is asking for problems.

If you absolutely want to use these sites to do transactions, meet the other party in person.  This greatly reduces the likelihood of a scam (although it didn't stop this guy from robbing people's Runescape Gold at gunpoint!)

Man-in-the-middle-scam

A new scam technique is emerging from these peer to peer marketplaces called Man-in-the-middle scamming or MITM.  This is when the scammer gets you to send money to a popular OSRS Gold website, like ours at R2Pleasent.com.  They give you our payment details, but act like it's their payment details.  So you send a payment to our company, without even knowing you are paying us.

The scammer then asks for the payment information.  The email you used to pay, the amount paid, etc.  They will then come to our website and say this is an order they made themselves.  From our standpoint, we have no way to tell the order was actually placed by a victim on another service.  To us it just looks like a normal order.

So now the scammer gets delivered the gold from the payment you made, which you thought was going directly to the scammer.  This allows the scammer to take more risky payment methods like PayPal or Bank Transfer, because the real money doesn't actually go to their account.  Many scammers are worried about the repercussions of a police report for theft, so they would prefer if the real money doesn't actually go to them.

Imposter Scam

The imposter scam dates back at least 10 years, from the days of MSN Messenger.  The scam is very simple.  The scammer creates a look-a-like account for the website they are impostering.  They will use chat systems like Skype or Discord to contact you.  Their name will appear to look like they work at the Gold Site, or they are the owner.  Here's some examples of Skype imposters for our site:

Every single person above is a Skype imposter!  Not one of those people actually work at R2Pleasent Gold, or have any relation to us.  They are 100% scammers.

Easy Fix: Use Live Support ONLY!

The easy solution to the imposter scam: Only trade on a website Live Support.  It's much more difficult for a scammer to make a fake website of ours, and I have not seen any real examples of this happening.  We even purchase similar domains to our own, so that it is more difficult.  For example: r2pleasant.com redirects to r2pleasent.com.

If you just type our name into Google, even if you butcher it, you'll find us at the top of the results.  So just use that to be absolutely sure, and you'll wind up on our site and Live Support, which is impossible to imposter!

This is Preventable!

  • Do not Buy OSRS Gold on websites like Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji, Craigslist

  • Do not send money to random people

  • Use established OSRS Gold Sites like R2Pleasent.com

  • Only communicate with Gold Sites using their Live Support.  Do not use Skype or Discord, there are MANY imposters on these Chat Services.

  • If someone tells you their life story, it's usually a trick for them to build trust and scam you

  • Never use a system like Western Union to send money unless you deeply trust the other party
